A North American Indian woman
Cornelius Krieghoff · 1846
Why it's great
A portrait of an Indigenous woman in traditional dress. Cornelius Krieghoff, a Dutch-born painter who lived in Quebec, painted many scenes of First Nations people. His pictures are an important record of life in the 1800s, though they show how a settler artist saw Indigenous people. It's a picture to study with care.

Cornelius Krieghoff was born in Amsterdam and moved to North America as a young man. He lived in Montreal and Quebec, where he painted lively scenes of French-Canadian farm life and winter. His humorous pictures made him one of Canada's most popular painters. He died in Chicago in 1872.
