Battle of Grunwald
Jan Matejko · 1878
Why it's great
In 1410 the armies of Poland and Lithuania defeated the Teutonic Knights in one of the largest battles of medieval Europe. Matejko painted it nearly as big as a wall, with hundreds of soldiers in a swirling clash. Poland was not an independent nation when he painted it, so the picture inspired national pride. It remains Poland's most famous painting.

Jan Matejko was born in Kraków, Poland, and became the nation's great painter of history. He made huge canvases of Poland's glories and heartbreaks, at a time when Poland was no longer an independent country. He lived most of his life in Kraków, where he later directed the School of Fine Arts. He's a national hero for keeping Polish memory alive.
