Mother and Child (The Oval Mirror)
Mary Cassatt · 1899
Why it's great
A mother holds her child on her lap, and a round mirror hangs behind them. Mary Cassatt became famous for her pictures of mothers and children. The soft colors and gentle gestures show a close bond. It's one of her most tender works.

Mary Cassatt was born near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and moved to Paris as a young woman. She was the only American to join the French Impressionists, and she specialized in tender pictures of mothers and children. She lived in France most of her life, and she also encouraged American collectors to buy Impressionist art. She died at her country home in France in 1926.
