Philadelphia Museum of Art
A Greek-temple-style museum at the top of a famous flight of steps, which the movie hero Rocky runs up. Inside are Van Gogh's Sunflowers, Cézanne's huge Bathers, Duchamp's Nude Descending a Staircase and a whole collection of Klee's strange, playful paintings.
History of the museum
The museum began in 1876 when Philadelphia held the great Centennial Exhibition for the nation's 100th birthday. The city decided to make a permanent art museum from it. The Greek-revival building on a hill at the end of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway was begun in 1919 and opened in 1928. The museum's modern collections grew with the gifts of Louise and Walter Arensberg, who had known Marcel Duchamp personally.
