After the Deluge
George Frederic Watts Β· 1886
Why it's great
A dark and empty ocean stretches to the horizon, with strange curls of cloud and one small ray of sun. Watts painted it as the end of the great Flood from the Bible, with no people in sight. It's a mysterious picture of nature before humans. It looks almost modern.
