MUNCH (Munch Museum)

📍 Oslo, Norway · Founded 1963

A tall, tilted museum on the Oslo waterfront holds the world's largest collection of Edvard Munch, about 28,000 works, including another version of The Scream.

History of the museum

Edvard Munch left all the paintings, prints and drawings in his possession to the city of Oslo when he died in 1944. The Munch Museum opened in 1963 to mark the centenary of his birth. In 2021 it moved into a large new building on the Bjørvika waterfront, a 13-story tower of aluminum panels. In 2004 thieves stole The Scream and Madonna from the old museum, and the paintings were recovered two years later.
