Hamburger Kunsthalle
Hamburg's art museum is known for German Romantic painting and holds Caspar David Friedrich's masterpiece, Wanderer above the Sea of Fog.
History of the museum
The museum was founded by citizens of Hamburg and opened in 1869 in a building by Georg Theodor Schirrmacher and Hermann von der Hude. It has been extended several times, and a new cube-shaped building opened in 1997 for modern art. The Friedrich collection is its pride.
