A Country Cobbler
Harriet Backer · 1887
Why it's great
A shoemaker works at his bench in a small farmhouse room, lit by a window. Harriet Backer was one of Norway's greatest painters, famous for the glow of light indoors. She studied in Munich and Paris and later taught many younger artists. The warm light and simple furnishings make an ordinary scene feel special.
