Heart of the Andes
Frederic Edwin Church Β· 1859
Why it's great
A great valley in Ecuador, with waterfalls, mountain peaks, tiny villagers and tropical plants. Church painted this huge canvas after trips to South America. In 1859 New Yorkers paid to see it, and crowds used binoculars to look at details. It made him famous.
