Athenaeum Portrait

Gilbert Stuart · 1796

Why it's great

George Washington looks out calmly, with a pale background left unfinished. Gilbert Stuart painted this in 1796, and it's the image of Washington on the U.S. one-dollar bill. Stuart never finished it, so he kept it and made copies. It's perhaps the most reproduced portrait in American history.
