Portrait of Madame Marie-Louise Trudaine
Jacques-Louis David · 1794
Why it's great
A young woman in a white dress sits in a simple chair, her hands in her lap, with a sad and gentle look. David painted her with simplicity in 1794. She was executed soon after, which makes the portrait even more moving. It's a hauntingly beautiful picture.

Jacques-Louis David was born in Paris and became the greatest painter of the Neoclassical style, inspired by ancient Greece and Rome. He supported the French Revolution and later became Napoleon's official painter. After Napoleon fell, he was forced into exile and spent his last years in Brussels, Belgium. He taught many famous students and shaped French art for generations.
