The Washington Family

Edward Savage · 1796

Why it's great

George Washington, his wife Martha, and her grandchildren sit around a table with a map of the new capital city, with an enslaved servant at the side. Savage painted it in 1796 and it was widely copied as a print. The picture shows the nation's first family in their elegant home. It also reminds us that the Washingtons enslaved people.
