The Skater
Gilbert Stuart Β· 1782
Why it's great
A tall, elegant man in a black coat and hat glides across an icy pond on one leg, in a graceful pose. Gilbert Stuart painted this portrait of William Grant in 1782 in London, and it made him famous. The picture shows the skater with a sense of fun. It hangs in the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
