San Zaccaria Altarpiece
Giovanni Bellini Β· 1505
Why it's great
Mary sits on a high throne with the baby Jesus, and four saints stand and read beneath an arch, while an angel plays a violin below her. Giovanni Bellini painted it in 1505 when he was about 70, and the golden light in the church is lovely.

Giovanni Bellini was a Venetian painter, born in Venice around 1430 into a family of painters. He was the teacher of Giorgione and Titian and led Venetian painting into the High Renaissance with his glowing colors and quiet, thoughtful Madonnas. He worked in Venice all his life and died there in 1516.
