The Merchant Georg Gisze
Hans Holbein the Younger · 1532
Why it's great
A merchant sits in his office among letters, coins, scales and a vase of carnations, with a nervous look at you. Hans Holbein the Younger painted him in 1532, and Georg Gisze was a German trader living in London.

Hans Holbein the Younger was a German painter born in Augsburg in about 1497. He worked in Basel and then in London, where he became court painter to King Henry VIII and painted portraits that made the Tudors famous. He died in London in 1543, probably of the plague.
