Portrait of Sir Thomas More
Hans Holbein the Younger Β· 1527
Why it's great
A thoughtful man in a fur-collared robe and a gold chain looks out at you, with a green background. Hans Holbein the Younger painted it in 1527, and More was the king's chancellor, who was beheaded after he refused to support Henry VIII.

Hans Holbein the Younger was a German painter born in Augsburg in about 1497. He worked in Basel and then in London, where he became court painter to King Henry VIII and painted portraits that made the Tudors famous. He died in London in 1543, probably of the plague.
