Christ taking leave of his Mother
Lorenzo Lotto · 1521
Why it's great
Christ kneels to say goodbye to Mary, who has fainted, as friends hold her up. Lorenzo Lotto painted it in 1521, and the red cloth stands out.

Lorenzo Lotto was a Venetian painter born in 1480, who traveled a lot and painted psychologically sharp portraits. His religious paintings have a quirky charm. He died in Loreto in 1556.
