La Belle Jardinière
Raphael · 1500
Why it's great
Mary sits in a meadow with the baby Jesus and the young John the Baptist, and she gazes down with love. Raphael painted it in about 1500, and it is one of his sweetest Madonnas.

Raphael was an Italian painter born in Urbino in 1483. He moved to Rome as a young man and painted frescoes for the Pope, as well as many gentle Madonnas and portraits, and was admired for the grace and balance of his work. He died in 1520, at the age of 37.
