Giorgione Β· 1500
Why it's great
King Solomon sits on a throne and orders a baby to be cut in two, to find the real mother. Giorgione is credited with this panel, in about 1500, and the baby is saved when the true mother begs him not to.

Giorgione was a Venetian painter born around 1478, who died very young, around 1510. He painted dreamy landscapes and moody portraits, and only a handful of his works survive. His soft style helped shape the work of his friend Titian.
