Procession in St. Mark's Square
Gentile Bellini Β· 1496
Why it's great
A huge crowd walks through Saint Mark's Square in Venice, carrying a relic of the True Cross under a canopy. Gentile Bellini painted it in 1496, and it shows the great church of St. Mark's with its gold mosaics as they were.

Gentile Bellini was an Italian painter born in Venice around 1429, the older brother of the painter Giovanni Bellini. He worked for the government of Venice and in 1479 was sent to Constantinople to paint the sultan Mehmed II. He returned to Venice and died there in 1507.
