Portrait of a Venetian Woman
Albrecht Dürer · 1505
Why it's great
A woman with flowing hair held by a thin cord looks out to the side, wearing a fur-trimmed dress. Albrecht Dürer painted it in about 1505 on his second trip to Venice, and she may be a Venetian friend.

Albrecht Dürer was a German artist born in Nuremberg in 1471. He was a painter, but he is most famous for his woodcuts and engravings, which made him known across Europe, and for traveling to Italy to learn from Renaissance artists. He lived mostly in Nuremberg and died there in 1528.
