Blue Horse I
Franz Marc Β· 1911
Why it's great
A bright blue horse stands in a landscape of red and yellow hills, with its head bent. Franz Marc used blue to represent strength and spirit. He believed animals were closer to nature than humans. It's one of the most famous expressionist paintings.
π Look closer!
Horses are never really blue. Why do you think the artist chose that color?

Franz Marc was born in Munich, Germany, and loved painting animals as a symbol of purity. He co-founded the Blue Rider group with Wassily Kandinsky, and he used bold colors like blue and yellow to express feelings. He lived in Bavaria. He died in World War I in 1916 at age 36.
