Goethe in the Roman Campagna
Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein Β· 1787
Why it's great
The great German writer Goethe reclines in a traveler's cloak and a wide hat, by a ruin in the Italian countryside. Tischbein painted his friend during their trip to Italy. The pose looks like an ancient hero. It's the most famous portrait of Goethe.
