The Age of Innocence

Joshua Reynolds Β· 1788

Why it's great

A little girl sits in a landscape, her head tilted, with a sweet look of curiosity. Reynolds was the first president of the Royal Academy, and he often painted children. The soft light and fluffy dress capture childhood. It's one of the best-loved child portraits in English art.

The girl looks to the side. What do you think she is listening to?
