Arnolfini Portrait
Jan van Eyck · 1434
Why it's great
A couple in a small bedroom holds hands, and a little dog stands at their feet. Look at the round mirror behind them: it shows the whole room, and two people standing in the door. Jan van Eyck painted this in 1434, and he even wrote on the wall that he was there.

Jan van Eyck was a Flemish painter born around 1390 who worked for the Duke of Burgundy and lived in Bruges until he died in 1441. He was a master of oil paint, using thin glowing layers to paint jewels, fabric and reflections in amazing detail. His Arnolfini Portrait and the Ghent Altarpiece are among the most famous pictures of the 1400s.
