Amedeo Modigliani · 1918
Why it's great
A young woman with a long neck, tilted head and almond-shaped eyes sits in a simple blue-and-black dress. Modigliani painted this in 1918, near the end of his short life. The elongated style is his signature. It is a graceful example of his gentle, calm portraits.

Amedeo Modigliani was born in Livorno, Italy, and moved to Paris in 1906. He painted and sculpted people with long necks, almond-shaped eyes, and elegant simplified faces. He was poor and ill throughout his short life and died in Paris at 35. Only after his death did his fame explode. Modigliani was born into a Sephardic Jewish family in Italy and was proud of his heritage all his life.
