Ritratto di Lunia Czechowska con ventaglio
Amedeo Modigliani · 1919
Why it's great
A woman with a fan sits in a soft rose-and-brown room, painted with Modigliani's long curves. Lunia Czechowska was a friend and a favorite model in his last years. The elegant shapes make her look like a figure from a Renaissance painting. It's an example of his mature style.

Amedeo Modigliani was born in Livorno, Italy, and moved to Paris in 1906. He painted and sculpted people with long necks, almond-shaped eyes, and elegant simplified faces. He was poor and ill throughout his short life and died in Paris at 35. Only after his death did his fame explode. Modigliani was born into a Sephardic Jewish family in Italy and was proud of his heritage all his life.
