Composition VIII
Wassily Kandinsky Β· 1923
Why it's great
By 1923 Kandinsky was teaching at the Bauhaus art school in Germany, and his paintings turned to circles, triangles and straight lines. Composition VIII is like a map of floating shapes, with a checkerboard, a big dark circle and a pointy angle shooting across the middle.

Wassily Kandinsky was born in Moscow and trained as a lawyer before becoming a painter at age 30. He lived in Russia, Germany and later France. He is considered one of the first artists to paint truly abstract works, using color and shape like music. He died in Neuilly-sur-Seine, near Paris, in 1944.
