The Blue Rider
Wassily Kandinsky Β· 1903
Why it's great
A rider on a galloping horse dashes through a bright meadow, in blue cloak and dots of color. Kandinsky's painting inspired the name of the art group 'Der Blaue Reiter' (The Blue Rider). The figure is almost abstract. It's a landmark of modern art.

Wassily Kandinsky was born in Moscow and trained as a lawyer before becoming a painter at age 30. He lived in Russia, Germany and later France. He is considered one of the first artists to paint truly abstract works, using color and shape like music. He died in Neuilly-sur-Seine, near Paris, in 1944.
