Composition VII
Wassily Kandinsky Β· 1913
Why it's great
A whirlwind of colors, shapes and lines swirls across the whole canvas. Kandinsky made dozens of studies for it and painted it in just four days. He believed that color and shape could move us like music. It's often called his masterpiece and one of the first great abstract paintings.

Wassily Kandinsky was born in Moscow and trained as a lawyer before becoming a painter at age 30. He lived in Russia, Germany and later France. He is considered one of the first artists to paint truly abstract works, using color and shape like music. He died in Neuilly-sur-Seine, near Paris, in 1944.
