Dynamism of a Soccer Player
Umberto Boccioni Β· 1913
Why it's great
A soccer player seems to explode into a swirl of blue and gold as he kicks the ball. Umberto Boccioni, a leader of Futurism, an art movement that loved speed, painted this in 1913 to show the player's movement, not his face.

Umberto Boccioni was born in Reggio Calabria, Italy, and became the leader of Futurism, a movement that celebrated speed and machines. He worked in Milan and Rome, painting and making sculptures full of motion. He died at 33 after falling from a horse during military training in 1916.
