The Street Enters the House
Umberto Boccioni ยท 1911
Why it's great
A woman leans over a balcony as the noise and the clamor of the street seem to rush into her home. Boccioni painted this as a Futurist, showing that the sounds and motion of a modern city mix with our inner lives. The shapes are fragmented and energetic. It's a bold modern painting.

Umberto Boccioni was born in Reggio Calabria, Italy, and became the leader of Futurism, a movement that celebrated speed and machines. He worked in Milan and Rome, painting and making sculptures full of motion. He died at 33 after falling from a horse during military training in 1916.
