Composition V
Wassily Kandinsky Β· 1911
Why it's great
Composition V (1911) is a huge painting full of ideas about the end of the world and a fresh start. Kandinsky made many sketches first, and the swirling colors and strokes feel like a storm clearing.

Wassily Kandinsky was born in Moscow and trained as a lawyer before becoming a painter at age 30. He lived in Russia, Germany and later France. He is considered one of the first artists to paint truly abstract works, using color and shape like music. He died in Neuilly-sur-Seine, near Paris, in 1944.
