On White II
Wassily Kandinsky Β· 1923
Why it's great
Circles, lines and angles float on a white field like notes in a piece of music. Kandinsky taught at the Bauhaus art school in Germany, where he mixed geometry with colorful, lively shapes. He believed that shapes and colors have feelings. It's a famous abstract painting.

Wassily Kandinsky was born in Moscow and trained as a lawyer before becoming a painter at age 30. He lived in Russia, Germany and later France. He is considered one of the first artists to paint truly abstract works, using color and shape like music. He died in Neuilly-sur-Seine, near Paris, in 1944.
