Impression lll (Concert)
Wassily Kandinsky Β· 1911
Why it's great
In January 1911 Kandinsky went to a concert of the composer Arnold Schoenberg in Munich and the music hit him so hard that he went home and painted it. The big yellow shape is the loud sound, and the black shape on the right is the grand piano.

Wassily Kandinsky was born in Moscow and trained as a lawyer before becoming a painter at age 30. He lived in Russia, Germany and later France. He is considered one of the first artists to paint truly abstract works, using color and shape like music. He died in Neuilly-sur-Seine, near Paris, in 1944.
