Piet Mondrian Β· 1921
Why it's great
A big red square, a yellow rectangle and a small blue block sit in a grid of thick black lines. By 1921 Mondrian had arrived at the style that made him famous, using only primary colors, black, white and straight lines.

Piet Mondrian was born in the Netherlands and started out painting windmills and trees. He lived in Amsterdam, Paris, London and finally New York City. Over time he simplified his art into straight black lines and blocks of red, yellow and blue. He died in New York in 1944, and his style inspired architects and designers worldwide.
