The Red Tree
Piet Mondrian · 1909
Why it's great
A tree with red-orange limbs twists against a blue background. Mondrian painted this early in his career, using color instead of realism. Later he would simplify trees into lines and grids. It's an important step on his journey to abstract art.

Piet Mondrian was born in the Netherlands and started out painting windmills and trees. He lived in Amsterdam, Paris, London and finally New York City. Over time he simplified his art into straight black lines and blocks of red, yellow and blue. He died in New York in 1944, and his style inspired architects and designers worldwide.
