Composition with Grid 1
Piet Mondrian Β· 1918
Why it's great
A cage of gray and yellow squares seems to float on a gray background like a window or a net, in Mondrian's grid painting of 1918. He wanted to paint the pure harmony underneath everything.

Piet Mondrian was born in the Netherlands and started out painting windmills and trees. He lived in Amsterdam, Paris, London and finally New York City. Over time he simplified his art into straight black lines and blocks of red, yellow and blue. He died in New York in 1944, and his style inspired architects and designers worldwide.
