Abtraction 26. Delicate Symphony
Kurt Schwitters Β· 1918
Why it's great
Soft, glowing shapes in blue, green and orange seem to blend like notes. Kurt Schwitters painted this early abstraction in 1918, before he started making his famous Merz collages.

Kurt Schwitters was a German artist born in Hanover in 1887. He made collages and sculptures from scraps and trash that he called Merz, and also wrote poems and designed his own Merz Building. He left Germany when the Nazis came to power, lived in Norway and then in England, and died in Ambleside in 1948.
