The Und-Picture
Kurt Schwitters Β· 1919
Why it's great
The word UND, which means AND in German, is glued onto a collage of cut paper, scraps and paint. Kurt Schwitters made this Merz picture in 1919, using bits and pieces that he found, like tickets and labels.

Kurt Schwitters was a German artist born in Hanover in 1887. He made collages and sculptures from scraps and trash that he called Merz, and also wrote poems and designed his own Merz Building. He left Germany when the Nazis came to power, lived in Norway and then in England, and died in Ambleside in 1948.
