Composition 10 in Black and White
Piet Mondrian Β· 1915
Why it's great
Short black and white lines form an oval like waves washing against a pier. Mondrian made this in 1915 from sketches of the sea at Domburg, and you can still feel the sea in it though there is nothing but plus and minus marks.

Piet Mondrian was born in the Netherlands and started out painting windmills and trees. He lived in Amsterdam, Paris, London and finally New York City. Over time he simplified his art into straight black lines and blocks of red, yellow and blue. He died in New York in 1944, and his style inspired architects and designers worldwide.
