Gorge
Wassily Kandinsky Β· 1914
Why it's great
Kandinsky painted Gorge in 1914, just as World War I was starting, and its tumbling shapes and strong colors feel like falling or like an avalanche in the mountains. It is one of the last paintings he made in Germany before he returned to Russia.

Wassily Kandinsky was born in Moscow and trained as a lawyer before becoming a painter at age 30. He lived in Russia, Germany and later France. He is considered one of the first artists to paint truly abstract works, using color and shape like music. He died in Neuilly-sur-Seine, near Paris, in 1944.
