Umberto Boccioni Β· 1912
Why it's great
Boccioni's mother sits on a balcony in a big mass of strong forms, houses and hands. He painted this in 1912, mixing the Futurist love of movement with a feeling of weight.

Umberto Boccioni was born in Reggio Calabria, Italy, and became the leader of Futurism, a movement that celebrated speed and machines. He worked in Milan and Rome, painting and making sculptures full of motion. He died at 33 after falling from a horse during military training in 1916.
