Improvisation 26
Wassily Kandinsky Β· 1912
Why it's great
Wassily Kandinsky called his most spontaneous pictures Improvisations, painted as freely as a musician plays. In Improvisation 26 (1912), look for the curve of a boat and the swirl of oars in the blue, and for how the colors seem to ripple like water.

Wassily Kandinsky was born in Moscow and trained as a lawyer before becoming a painter at age 30. He lived in Russia, Germany and later France. He is considered one of the first artists to paint truly abstract works, using color and shape like music. He died in Neuilly-sur-Seine, near Paris, in 1944.
