The Ten Largest, No. 2, Childhood
Hilma af Klint Β· 1907
Why it's great
Big circles in blue and orange, with a pink flower, flow across the canvas in the second of Hilma af Klint's Ten Largest, which show the ages of a person from childhood to old age. They were painted in 1907 and are bigger than most doors.

Hilma af Klint was a Swedish artist born near Stockholm in 1862. She trained as a painter and in 1906 began making huge abstract paintings, years before the famous pioneers of abstract art, but she asked that they not be shown until 20 years after her death. She died in 1944, and her work became world famous in the 2000s.
