The Ten Largest, No. 9, Old Age
Hilma af Klint Β· 1907
Why it's great
Pale pink and white discs, like dandelion clocks, fill the ninth painting in the Ten Largest series, which shows old age. Hilma af Klint painted it in 1907 in soft, fading colors.

Hilma af Klint was a Swedish artist born near Stockholm in 1862. She trained as a painter and in 1906 began making huge abstract paintings, years before the famous pioneers of abstract art, but she asked that they not be shown until 20 years after her death. She died in 1944, and her work became world famous in the 2000s.
