Portrait of a Lady
Gustav Klimt Β· 1916
Why it's great
A woman looks over her shoulder with a bold stare, wearing a patterned robe, set against a pale background. Klimt painted it at the end of his career. It was stolen from a museum in Italy in 1997 and mysteriously reappeared in 2019. It's one of the strangest art stories.

Gustav Klimt was born near Vienna, Austria, the son of a gold engraver, which may be why gold glitters in so many of his paintings. He lived his entire life in and around Vienna and co-founded the Vienna Secession, a group of artists who broke from tradition. He painted beautiful portraits, murals, and landscapes. He died in 1918 at age 55 after a stroke.
