Antonia
Amedeo Modigliani · 1915
Why it's great
A woman sits calmly with her hands in her lap, painted in Modigliani's trademark style: a long neck, a simple oval face and almond-shaped eyes with no pupils. Modigliani was Jewish and was born in Italy, then lived in Paris. He painted friends and fellow artists over and over, and these quiet portraits have become some of the most recognizable faces in modern art.

Amedeo Modigliani was born in Livorno, Italy, and moved to Paris in 1906. He painted and sculpted people with long necks, almond-shaped eyes, and elegant simplified faces. He was poor and ill throughout his short life and died in Paris at 35. Only after his death did his fame explode. Modigliani was born into a Sephardic Jewish family in Italy and was proud of his heritage all his life.
