Self-portrait
Amedeo Modigliani · 1919
Why it's great
Modigliani looks out at us with the long face and narrow eyes he gave all his portrait subjects. Painted in the last year of his short life, it shows him as a quiet, thoughtful man. He died in Paris at only 35, but his fame grew enormously after his death. The painting hangs in a museum in Brazil.

Amedeo Modigliani was born in Livorno, Italy, and moved to Paris in 1906. He painted and sculpted people with long necks, almond-shaped eyes, and elegant simplified faces. He was poor and ill throughout his short life and died in Paris at 35. Only after his death did his fame explode. Modigliani was born into a Sephardic Jewish family in Italy and was proud of his heritage all his life.
