Portrait of Adèle Besson

Pierre-Auguste Renoir · 1918

Why it's great

A young girl with a mass of light brown curls and dark eyes looks out, wearing a light pink dress. Renoir painted Adèle Besson in his later years, in a warm, glowing manner. The portrait is soft and sweet. It's a charming late work.

About the artist

Pierre-Auguste Renoir

1841–1919 · born in Limoges · died in Cagnes-sur-Mer

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges, France, and started his working life painting designs on porcelain. In Paris he became a founding Impressionist, famous for glowing scenes of friends, dancing, and sunshine. Later in life he lived in the warm south of France, and he kept painting even when arthritis twisted his hands, with a brush strapped to his fingers. He left thousands of cheerful paintings.
